Labour pain is something many women think about during pregnancy - often with a mix of curiosity, uncertainty, and sometimes fear.

You might be wondering…

What will it actually feel like?

Will I be able to handle it?

The truth is, every birth is different. But understanding what labour pain is and how to work with it - can help you feel more prepared and supported going into your birth.

What is labour pain?

Labour pain isn’t just “pain” in the way we often think of it.

It’s your body working to meet your baby.

Each contraction is your uterus tightening and releasing, helping your baby move down and your cervix open. It has a purpose. It builds, peaks, and then softens, again and again.

Unlike other types of pain, labour pain comes in waves. And in between those waves, there are often pockets of rest.

Why it can feel overwhelming

Even though labour pain is natural, it can still feel intense.

Often, it’s not just the sensation itself - but:

  • not knowing what to expect

  • feeling out of control

  • not having ways to cope in the moment

This is where preparation can gently support you.

It’s not about “removing” the pain

A common misconception is that birth preparation is about eliminating pain altogether.

But for many women, it’s more helpful to think about:

  •  How can I feel supported through it?
  • How can I stay grounded when it builds?

When you have tools and techniques to lean on, the experience can feel more manageable, even when it’s intense.

Simple ways to support yourself during labour

Every woman is different, but many find comfort in having a few simple supports ready.

Something to hold

Having something to squeeze or grip can help channel intensity and give your body a point of focus during contractions.

Something to focus on

Breath, touch, or a physical object can help bring your attention inward and keep you grounded.

 A calm environment

Lighting, familiar items, and a supportive space can help your body feel safe - which can make a real difference in how you experience labour.

Support from others

Your partner, midwife, or support person can offer reassurance, touch, and encouragement when you need it most.

Trusting your body

One of the most powerful shifts is moving from fear… to trust.

Your body knows how to birth.

You don’t need to have everything figured out - just a few ways to support yourself, and the space to move through it in your own way, that feels safe for you.

A gentle reminder

You don’t need to prepare perfectly.

You don’t need every tool.

You don’t need to do it like anyone else.

But having a few simple supports nearby, something to hold, something to ground you,  can help you feel more calm, more present, and more supported in those moments when you really need.

Labour is powerful. It’s intense. But it’s also something your body is designed to do. And you definitely don’t have to go into it empty-handed. Our birth tools are the perfect birth companion!
