How to Actually Use Birth Affirmations (So They Work)?

Birth Affirmation Cards - Cosy Mama

If you've spent any time preparing for birth, chances are you've come across birth affirmations or heard of them. Short, positive phrases designed to help calm your mind and build confidence for labour. The truth is most people either skip them entirely, or write a few down, tuck them into a birth bag, and never actually use them.

Affirmations aren't magic words. They're a tool, and like any tool, they only work if you use them properly. Here's how to make birth affirmations a genuine part of your birth prep, not just a nice idea that gets forgotten.

Choose Ones That Feel True to You

Not every affirmation will resonate, and that's totally okay. Skip past anything that feels forced or it doesn't speak to you. The affirmations that help most in the middle of labour are the ones you already believe, even a little, because your mind is far less likely to trust a phrase that feels unfamiliar and unnatural when you're under real pressure.

If a phrase like "I embrace all sensations of birth" doesn't sit right with you, that's completely fine. Something like "I can do hard things," might feel far more honest, and far more powerful, in the moment.

Practice Before Labour, Not Just During

This is the part most people miss. Affirmations aren't something you pull out for the first time mid-contraction and expect to work instantly. Say them out loud in the months/weeks leading up to birth, in the shower, on a walk, before bed. The more familiar they feel now, the more naturally they'll come to mind when you need them.

Think of it a little like learning a piece of music. You don't wait until performance day to practice it for the first time.

Keep Them Visible

Stick them on your bathroom mirror, in the living room, or on your bedside table. Keep them somewhere you'll genuinely see them. Don't forget to pack them in your birth bag for labour itself, they are something simple your birth partner can hold up or read aloud if needed.

Let Your Birth Partner Know Them Too

This is one of the most overlooked tips, but one of the most useful. Share your affirmations with your birth partner ahead of time. In the moments where you can't find the words yourself, when you're deep in a contraction and everything feels overwhelming, they can say the words for you. Sometimes hearing an affirmation spoken by someone you trust is even more grounding than saying it yourself.

A Few to Get You Started

If you're not sure where to begin, here are a few simple, widely-loved affirmations:

  • "I embrace all sensations of birth."
  • "Each contraction brings me closer to holding my baby."
  • "I am safe, I am supported, I am strong."
  • "I dance with rhythm of birth."

Use these as a starting point, but don't be afraid to write your own. Some of the most powerful affirmations are often the ones that come from your own words, your own fears, and your own reasons for feeling ready. Otherwise you can purchase our Birth Affirmations cards which come in a set of 30.

The Real Point of Affirmations

Birth affirmations aren't about pretending everything will be easy, or forcing positivity onto a hard moment. They're about giving your mind something steady to hold onto, a few honest, familiar words that can help bring you back to yourself when things feel intense.

Choose the ones that feel right for you, practice them before you need them, keep them visible, and let the people around you know them too. That's really all it takes to turn affirmations from a nice idea into something that can genuinely help.

Much love,
