If you're pregnant, chances are you've heard all three of these terms thrown around, sometimes interchangeably, sometimes not. But a doula, a midwife, and a birth partner all play different roles in your birth, and understanding the difference can help you build the support team that's right for you.
Midwife
Your midwife is a medically trained healthcare professional. Throughout your pregnancy, labour, and birth, she monitors both your health and your baby's, and she's qualified to support you in delivering your baby and help make clinical decisions if something needs attention. In New Zealand, your midwife is often your Lead Maternity Carer (LMC), meaning she's with you for the whole journey, not just the birth itself.
Doula
A doula isn't medically trained and doesn't provide clinical care, but that's not her job. Instead, a doula offers continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after your birth. She's focused entirely on you, your comfort, your confidence, and making sure your voice is heard throughout the process. Unlike a midwife, a doula is hired privately and works alongside, not instead of, your medical team.
Birth Partner
Your birth partner is your personal support person, often your partner, a close friend, or a family member. No formal training is required. They're the one physically by your side throughout labour, offering comfort, reassurance, and presence. With a little preparation (like learning simple massage techniques or how to use natural tools such as a birth ball or massage oil), a birth partner can feel far more confident supporting you when it matters most.
Do You Need All Three?
Not necessarily. Some mamas have all three in their birth space; others have just a midwife and a birth partner. You need to decide what feels right for you and your birthing preferences as to who you have as part of your team, and the support you feel you need and would like.
It is important to understand what each role actually offers, so you can build a birth team, however big or small, that helps you feel supported, safe, and heard.
At Cosy Mama, we believe birth support goes beyond who's in your birth space with you. Our range of natural, holistic birth tools is designed to support you and your birth partner, giving you both a little more confidence, comfort, and calm along the way.
Remember this is your baby, your body and your birth.
